CHAPTER 31

Present Day - Castletownbere, Ireland

Jim sat handcuffed to the police officers desk in his station house, a room the size of an average kitchen. He was getting visibly frustrated as it approached his fourth hour of looking at the same two metal desks and a holding cell that would have looked more at home in 1880’s Wyoming with its padlocked iron bar door. That and the fact that the cell could fit maybe two prisoners if the police officer stopped using the cell for storage of boxes upon boxes of official paper records.

The story of how he had acquired the 9mm was now long finished. Also, the woman who witnessed the actual crime had come by to vouch for Jim. It also helped that the woman was a 2nd cousin of the officer. Jim had hoped the officer would have released him on his own recognizance. But things tended to mover slower in Ireland; a lot slower.

The phone suddenly rang to life. Jim sat listening to the officer as he spoke on the phone. At first it seemed like a prank call with the officer not believing the identity of the person on the other end. But after a few minutes the officer basically sat at attention in his chair. After about five minutes of a lot of yes sirs, and no sirs, the officer hung up the phone. He was sweating profusely. He reached into his desk and pulled out a bottle of Jamison, along with two small glasses, pouring a small amount into each.

“It seems as though you have some very high up friends.” He reached over and used his key to unlock the handcuffs around Jim wrists. “You are a free man, Mr. Dieter.” He slid the glass of whiskey across to Jim. “That person on the phone was Sir Robert John, Head of MI-6. He said you are essentially working with his people on a need to know business.”

“How do I get myself into these situations,” said Jim to the police officer. He took the glass, “Slancha” he said, cheers, as they both consumed the glasses contents.

“Please accept my apologies,” said the officer as he handed him back his wallet and cell phone. He paused for several seconds as he looked at the confiscated 9mm before following Sir Robert John’s advice and returned the weapon to Jim.

Jim thanked the officer, realizing the tight situation he was in. Weapons are a no-no in Ireland. Sir Robert John must have really told him a whopper. When Jim turned on his iPhone he noticed he had five missed calls from Nora. He quickly called his voicemail only to be rewarded with Nora informing him that she, Eian, and Shannon were being held hostage by a lunatic. She provided the address where they were being held and she stressed that only he was to come. She also provided him with Hassan’s cell phone number. And he couldn’t tell a soul of their plight. No one else or they would be dead.
